Best Time for a Gir Safari: A Month-by-Month Guide
The dry-deciduous forest of Gir keeps its own calendar. Ask when to come and the honest answer is that the best time for a Gir safari depends on what you want to see — lions at a waterhole in the heat, or a green forest loud with birdsong after the rains.
Gir National Park is open to safari from mid-October to mid-June, and closed through the monsoon (roughly 16 June to 15 October) when the forest breeds and regenerates. Here is how each stretch of the open season actually feels on the ground.
October to November — the forest at its greenest
The park reopens in mid-October to a landscape still holding the monsoon's green. Temperatures are gentle (20–32°C), migratory birds are arriving, and the light is soft for photography. Lion sightings are steady though the density of cover is highest now.
December to February — the comfortable peak
Winter is the most popular window and the easiest on first-time visitors. Cool mornings (10–14°C), clear afternoons, and animals moving in daylight. This is the best time for a Gir safari if comfort and reliable sightings matter more than solitude — so permits go fastest. Book well ahead.
March to mid-June — the season of sightings
As the forest dries and waterholes shrink, wildlife concentrates around water and sightings of Asiatic lion, leopard and deer rise sharply. Days are hot (up to 42°C in May) but early-morning safaris remain workable, and serious wildlife photographers consider this the prime window.
Monsoon closure — why mid-June to September is quiet
The core zone closes for breeding and safety. Devalia Interpretation Zone may remain partially open, but the full jungle experience returns in October. If you are planning a stay in these months, come for the forest and the food rather than the safari.
